Contact with PI9ISS (Andre Kuipers)
Saturday April 21th. at about 20:00 UTC I had a brief radio contact with Andre Kuipers who is an Astronaute on the I(nternational) S(pace) S(tation). I had planned this QSO since his spaceflight was announced.

I had tried to make contact before without any result till now. Was it luck? No. The same day I had a conversation with Cor (PD0RKC) and he told me about the presleep period of every Astronaute. Presleep is just another word for free time before going to sleep.
So... I just called him Saturday the 21th. of April on 20:00 UTC and I had seen that Andre's Presleep period was scheduled from 19:30 - 21:30 UTC. At that time the ISS was travelling above the Netherlands.

I contacted him with my Icom IC-910H and my X-Yagi on 3 meters height directed by my Azimuth-Elevated rotor of AlphaSpid. I had to direct the antenna by hand and there was no doppler correction, because I still did not know my Icom IC-910H well enough to do so in satellite mode. That's the reason that Andre did not hear me well at the beginning of the QSO. My signal was 2kHz. off base, because of the doppler correction which I did not use.

Just after 4 calls Andre came back from me and I was baffled for a moment. So I had to search for my words at first. The second picture has been taken from a video made by Andre for the Dutch Television. It displays the amateur radio transciever used for ISS to Earth contacts. Anyway here is the QSO.

Leap second inserted on the first of July 2012
In the night of 1st. of July 2012 on 01:59:59 middle European time (UTC +2) there will be inserted a leap second to make the coordinated worldtime match the atomic time again. After 01:59:59 will come first 01:59:60 and then 02:00:00. The German atomic time transmitter DCF77 will announce the leap second before applying by setting the A2 bit in the time signal. This prevents the DCF77 clocks recognizing this leap second as a faulty transmission and ingnore it.

The default second has been defined in 1967 as 9.192.631.770 times the vibrating period of a cesium atom. This equals almost one full turn of the earth devided by 60 * 24 * 24. The rotation of the earth however is not constant and now the earth is turning a little slower then in 1967. So there is a time difference between the 'atomic time' and the 'world time UT1'. Therefore we use instead of UT1 the 'coordinated world time' UTC which kept the same as the atomic time by insering leap seconds. The last leap second was inserted 3.5 years ago.

E107Radio and 2 plugins
Some weeks ago became two plugins available for the E107 CMS on the E107Radio website which also has been used for this website. There is a newer version of the Logbook plugin. Father Barry made a lot of changes to this plugin. I am using still the old version here.

I made a PSKReporter plugin. When installed you are able to make some statistics visible on the screen. No, no graphics yet, but some statistical data on the screen. The receivers, the stations who heard you, the stations which has been heard by you and the countries you heard the last seven days. This plugin has a link here in the main menu on this website.

Just surf to http://e107radio.org, register and download the plugin. Feedback is always welcome.
